17th Edition Amendment 2

17th edition 1st amendment

BS 7671: 2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations (IEE Wiring Regulations, Seventeenth Edition) Amendment 2:2013 has been released on 1 August 2013.

Unlike the First Amendment it is not a re-issue of the whole book, but a standalone document that can slot into the existing Wiring Regulations book. It is a free to download document which is available from the IET website here or to purchase for print here. Free registration is required to view the 17th Edition Second Amendment document.

All installations designed after 31 July 2013 are to comply with BS 7671:2008 Amendment 2:2013.

So, what is new?

722 Electric Vehicle Charging installations.

The new addition to the IEE Wiring Regulations is the inclusion of a new part (722) on electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The new section is named: 722 Electric Vehicle Charging installations.

This amendment is designed for all involved in the installation of electric vehicle charging points. The specific requirements include PME systems, socket-outlets and connectors, as well as external influences, isolation and switching and RCD protection.

The amendment covers the four basic types of EV charging points. These are Modes 1, 2, 3 and 4 charging. However, inductive wireless charging is not covered.

Other aspects of EV charging circuits within Section 722 include the following:

  • Part 2 - Definitions
  • Part 7 - Special installations or locations particular requirements
  • 722 - Electric vehicle charging installations
  • 722.1 - Scope
  • 722.3 - Assessment of general characteristics
  • 722.4 - Protection for safety
  • 722.5 - Selection and erection of equipment
  • 722.55 - Other equipment
  • Annex A722 (Informative) Guidance for TN systems where PME conditions apply
  • Appendix 1 (Normative) British Standards to which reference is made in the regulations

The new section on EV charging points is a valuable addition to the existing 17th Edition of Wiring Regulations. We welcome the fact that there is no need to purchase a brand new book because the electronic and printable versions are available on the IET website.
